How Many Words Are in a Page?
The Short Answer
A standard page holds about 500 words when single-spaced and about 250 words when double-spaced. That is the figure teachers, editors and publishers use, and it assumes the most common setup of all: US Letter or A4 paper, 1-inch margins on all sides, and 12-point Times New Roman. Change the font, the size or the spacing and the number moves — the tables below show by how much, so you can find the count for your exact setup. And when you need the exact count of a real document rather than an estimate, paste it into our free Word Counter and get the true number in a second.
Words Per Page by Spacing
Spacing is the biggest factor. Double-spacing puts half as many lines on the page, so it halves the word count almost exactly. All figures below use 12pt Times New Roman, 1-inch margins, Letter/A4 paper.
| Line spacing | Words per page (approx.) |
|---|---|
| Single (1.0) | 500 |
| 1.15 | 450 |
| 1.5 | 375 |
| Double (2.0) | 250 |
This is why teachers ask for double-spaced essays: a 1,000-word essay is 2 pages single-spaced but 4 pages double-spaced, and the wide gaps leave room for comments and corrections between the lines.
How Font Size Changes the Count
Smaller type fits more words on the same page; larger type fits fewer. Still using Times New Roman, single-spacing and 1-inch margins:
| Font size | Single-spaced | Double-spaced |
|---|---|---|
| 10 pt | 650 | 325 |
| 11 pt | 550 | 275 |
| 12 pt | 500 | 250 |
| 14 pt | 400 | 200 |
Notice the pattern: dropping from 12pt to 10pt squeezes in roughly 150 extra words a page, while jumping to 14pt loses about 100. If an assignment sets a minimum page count, it almost always also sets the font size — now you can see why.
Different Fonts, Different Counts
Fonts are not the same width. At the same 12pt size, a wide font like Arial fills a page faster than Times New Roman, while Word’s default Calibri is smaller and lighter, so more words fit. Treat these as good approximations rather than exact promises:
| Font (12 pt unless noted) | Single-spaced | Double-spaced |
|---|---|---|
| Times New Roman | 500 | 250 |
| Arial | 475 | 240 |
| Georgia | 490 | 245 |
| Calibri (11 pt, Word default) | 550 | 275 |
| Courier New | 375 | 190 |
Courier New is the extreme case: it is a monospace font, where every character takes the same width, so a page holds noticeably fewer words. It survives mainly in screenplays and coding, where that even spacing is the point.
A4 vs Letter: Does Paper Size Matter?
Barely. US Letter (8.5 × 11 inches) and A4 (210 × 297 mm) are close cousins: A4 is a little narrower and a little taller. With the same 1-inch (2.54 cm) margins and the same font, an A4 page holds roughly the same number of words as a Letter page — within about 5 percent either way. So the 500/250 rule works on both sides of the Atlantic, and you only need the exact count, not a new estimate, when a submission limit is strict.
What About a Handwritten Page?
Handwriting fits far less. On a standard lined page, average adult or teenage handwriting holds roughly 150 to 250 words — about 200 is a fair working figure, close to a double-spaced typed page. Big, spaced-out writing can drop near 100 words a page, while small, neat writing can pass 250. So a 500-word essay is usually about 2 to 3 handwritten pages. If you are drafting by hand and need the count later, type the text up and run it through the Word Counter — counting handwritten words by hand is nobody’s idea of fun.
From Words to Pages: A Student’s Conversion Chart
The question usually runs the other way: “my essay must be X words — how many pages is that?” Here is the quick chart for 12pt Times New Roman with 1-inch margins. It builds on the same counting ideas we use for paragraphs in our guide on how many words are in a paragraph, and our essay word counter guide helps you plan the essay itself.
| Word count | Pages, single-spaced | Pages, double-spaced |
|---|---|---|
| 250 words | ½ page | 1 page |
| 500 words | 1 page | 2 pages |
| 1,000 words | 2 pages | 4 pages |
| 1,500 words | 3 pages | 6 pages |
| 2,500 words | 5 pages | 10 pages |
| 5,000 words | 10 pages | 20 pages |
How to Check the Exact Count of Your Own Page
Estimates are fine for planning, but word limits are exact. The surest method is to count the actual text: open your document, copy the text, and paste it into the Word Counter. It reports words, characters, sentences and paragraphs instantly, and it is free with no sign-up. That is the number to trust when a teacher, client or application form gives you a limit — not the page estimate, which can drift with margins, headings, lists and pictures, all of which take page space without adding words.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many words are in a page of a book?
A typical printed novel page holds about 250 to 350 words, because book pages are smaller than A4 or Letter and use comfortable margins. Large hardbacks can reach 400; small paperbacks sit near 250.
How many words are in a double-spaced page?
About 250 words in 12pt Times New Roman with 1-inch margins — exactly half the roughly 500 words of a single-spaced page. In 12pt Arial it is closer to 240.
How many pages is a 1,000-word essay?
Two pages single-spaced or four pages double-spaced, in 12pt Times New Roman with 1-inch margins. That is why a “4-page essay” and a “1,000-word essay” are usually the same assignment in disguise.
How many words fit on an A4 page?
About 500 words single-spaced and 250 double-spaced in 12pt with standard margins — effectively the same as a US Letter page, within about 5 percent.
Does the 500-words-per-page rule include headings and titles?
Not exactly. The rule assumes a full page of body text. Headings, subheadings, blank lines, lists and images all take up space, so a real document page often holds a little less — one more reason to count the actual words when a limit matters.
